2014 Candidate Filing Period Opens
Candidate Tracking System available at scVOTES.org
COLUMBIA, SC (March 17, 2014) - The 2014 candidate filing process is proceeding smoothly today with partisan candidates filing for various offices at election commissions throughout the state. Today marks the first full day of the filing period. Nearly 300 candidates had filed by 4 p.m.
In response to more than 200 candidates being removed from ballots in 2012, the General Assembly passed the Equal Access to the Ballot Act. The Act separated the ethics filing process from the candidate filing process and moved candidate filing from political parties to election commissions. Candidates are still required to file ethics reports. Failure to do so will result in fines but has no impact on the candidate's access to the ballot.
"Candidate filing has never been more accessible to candidates and has never been more transparent for the public," said Marci Andino, Executive Director of the State Election Commission. As candidates file, their names, copies of forms, and other information is immediately posted online. Everyone can see the filing process as it happens instead of having to wait until the close of filing to find out. To see who has filed, visit scVOTES.org and click the link for the Candidate Tracking System on the front page.
All candidates now have a publicly-accessible, easy-to-find office where they can file. The 46 county election commission offices and the State Election Commission are open to accept filing during regular business hours. In addition, all election commission offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30. The filing period closes at noon on Sunday, March 30, 2014.
