October 7 is Voter Registration Deadline for November 7 Election

COLUMBIA, SC—Anyone who is not already registered and wants to vote in the November 7, 2006 General Election must be registered by Saturday, October 7, 2006.

Voters can register in person at their county voter registration offices or download a voter registration form and mail it to their county voter registration offices.

If you are registering in person, you must do so by Saturday, October 7. Contact your county office for hours of operation. Many will open on Saturday. If you are registering by mail, the application must be postmarked no later than Saturday, October 7.

To help ensure the election runs efficiently at precincts statewide, the State Election Commission is asking voters who are already registered to update their addresses and other registration information with their county voter registration offices by October 7. Voters may do this by downloading voter registration update forms and mailing them to their county voter registration offices, or by visiting the offices in person.

More than 2.4 million South Carolinians are currently eligible to vote in the 2006 General Election, and more will register before the deadline. The number of registered voters in the state has increased by approximately 130,000 since November 2004—a 5.6% increase.
