Placement of Candidates on Ballots in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (September 1, 2023) – The South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) has received numerous questions from citizens and media regarding the 14th amendment and the eligibility of candidates for election in South Carolina.

In South Carolina, political parties are responsible for determining qualifications for their candidates and for certifying them for placement on the ballot in partisan elections. Short of a process or paperwork disqualification, the SEC does not have the authority to disqualify a certified candidate and exclude them from placement on the ballot.

The mission of the State Election Commission is to ensure every eligible citizen has the opportunity to register to vote and participate in fair and impartial elections with the assurance that every vote will count.
