South Carolina State Election Commission Honored with Two National Clearie Awards
COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 17) — The South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) is proud to announce it has received two national Clearinghouse Awards, commonly known as “Clearies,” from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), along with an honorable mention, for outstanding achievements in election administration.
The Clearies recognize best practices in election administration and highlight programs that can serve as models for offices across the country. Dozens of election jurisdictions submit entries each year, and South Carolina was one of only a few states recognized in multiple categories. The SEC’s award-winning efforts demonstrate the agency’s innovative leadership in delivering secure, accessible, and voter-focused elections.
Award-Winning Initiatives
Prep for the Polls Program – Distinguished Voter Education and Communications Initiatives
This statewide campaign encouraged voters to visit scVOTES.gov ahead of the 2024 General Election to check their sample ballot, polling place, and registration information. By empowering voters with the tools to prepare in advance, the initiative helped prevent common Election Day issues and promoted a smoother, more informed voting experience.
ASL Voter Education Videos – Best Practices for Improving Accessibility for Voters with Disabilities
In partnership with Disability Rights South Carolina, the SEC produced a series of instructional videos featuring American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and high-contrast captions. Topics included voting accessibility and absentee voting, expanding access to critical information for voters with hearing and visual impairments.
Honorable Mention
Election Worker Emergency Response Guide – Exemplary Contingency Planning and Emergency Response Efforts
The SEC developed a quick-reference emergency guide for poll managers and clerks to use during training and on Election Day. Covering scenarios such as power outages, cybersecurity incidents, and other disruptions, the guide helps equip poll workers to respond effectively and maintain confidence in the electoral process.
“These awards reflect our unwavering commitment to secure, accessible, and transparent elections,” said Howie Knapp, Executive Director of the SEC. “I’m incredibly proud of our team’s innovative work and their continued dedication to serving South Carolina voters and setting a national example for election excellence.”
These awards reflect the SEC’s strong commitment to conducting secure and accessible elections for all voters. For more information about the EAC's Clearinghouse Awards and to view the full list of 2024 winners, visit EAC Clearinghouse Award Winners 2024.
